Alves started training in Muay Thai at the age of 14, began competing seriously at 15, and won his first professional fight at 18. Initially, he stayed away from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as he found its practitioners in Fortaleza arrogant. In fact, he got into a street fight with some to help a friend in his youth. Apparently, one of the guys hit him in the back of the head. Alves turned around and knocked him out.
Eventually, Alves began training in MMA at the age of 17 and won his first MMA fight in 2001 over Wilson Belchoir by KO. At 19, he moved from Brazil to Florida for training.
