Li Na is the daughter of Yan-Ping and Li Sheng-Peng, who was a professional badminton player. Jiang Shan married Li and became her personal coach in 2006 but she has used other coaches since. Began playing tennis at age 9 after playing badminton for two years. she debuted in 1996 as a 14-year-old in Beijing, but did not play in 1997 and 1998. She won the 1998 Asian Youth Cup at age 16 and in 2004 when she won her first Tour singles title at Guangzhou. In 2011, she reached her first Grand Slam final, falling to Clijsters at the finals of the Australian Open then broke through with her first career Grand Slam at the French Open, becoming the first Grand Slam singles champion born in an Asian country. She is known for her humorous and candid personality. She speaks Chinese and English.
