Petra Kvitova Bio and Pics

The world of women’s professional tennis just found another star in the making, in the person of pretty yet very talented Czech tennis star Petra Kvitova.

This developed after Kvitova beat Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova in a dominating fashion in the women’s Finals of the 2011 Wimbledon tennis tournament 6-3, 6-4 Saturday. Kvitova who is playing in her first Grand Slam championship match showed nerve of steel as she was able to handle the aggressive play of Sharapova and eventually beat the latter in their match-up.

The Czech tennis star used her big, flat left-handed ground-strokes to defeat the equally determined Sharapova in their match. Kvitova expressed joy over her win and hoped she can win more professional tennis crowns in the future.

Sharapova for her part is sad with her loss but still congratulated Kvitova for her great victory and performance. With her win, tennis experts said the world of professional tennis for women just found a new gem in the sport.

The experts said the win over Sharapova is a huge boost in the career of Kvitova who is currently ranked number eight in the world. It was learned that before Wimbledon in 2010, Kvitova’s career record on grass was 0-4. She is 16-2 on the slick surface since, including a run to the semifinals here last year before losing to Serena Williams.

At 21, Kvitova is the youngest Wimbledon champion since—you guessed it— Sharapova was 17 in 2004. Kvitova is also the first Czech to win the tournament since Jana Novotna in 1998.

Plus, Kvitova is only the third left-handed woman to win the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. The last was Martina Navratilova, who won her ninth Wimbledon title in 1990, a few months after Kvitova was born.
